Sun Spot Removal

Sun Spot Removal

Did you know the largest organ of your body is actually your skin? Sun Spot Removal treatment  consists of three layers: the subcutaneous, the dermis, and the epidermis layer. While you’re exposed to sunlight, the epidermis is constantly hit by rays of UV light. The ultraviolet light damages your surface cells, and after a while forms fine red blood vessels and can cause an increased amount of abnormal cells (with the potential to turn cancerous). Sadly, the pigment does not increase evenly, and manifests as freckles, sun spots or liver spots; all referred to as solar lentigines. Although they pose no danger to your health, these spots don’t fade over time and become a permanent mark on your skin.

Sun Spot Treatments

The Golla Center for Dermatology in Pittsburgh offers a broad range of treatments for age and sun spots including peels, home therapy and laser treatments. The best treatment plan must be tailored to the individual patient, severity of their condition and their skin type. These treatments are purely cosmetic and may include any of the following:

Laser Removal

Laser Removal

Sun spots can usually be removed with laser treatments like the Alexandrite or Intense Pulse Light (IPL). These treatments are a safe and effective way to remove discoloration. Typically a treatment program will include two to four treatments performed four weeks apart.
Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are able to improve your skin’s appearance by allowing the top layers of skin to dry and peel off, stimulating the creation of new healthy skin and minimizing the appearance of brown spots. Depending on your unique needs, we can offer TCA chemical peels and glycolic acid peels; both effective at removing the damaged layer of skin.
Liquid Nitrogen

Liquid Nitrogen

Liquid nitrogen can be applied to individual sunspots. It will freeze the surface cells, in essence, resulting in a medically induced frostbite. Damaged cells are destroyed, thus allowing them to dry and peel off to expose new healthy cells below.
